Develop Your Passion

Before reading Ephrat Levni’s article, “Find Your Passion” is bad advice“, I would always tell my students to “get out there and find your passion, and your destiny awaits you!” I would speak these words with such conviction because this is what I was always told.
Levni’s article was truly an eye-opener. The article suggests that we have to STOP telling our co-workers, students, and even family members to stop seeking their passion and we need to start telling them to DEVELOP their passion.
This is really good advice because as Levni described in the article, your passion isn’t sitting there waiting for you and all the questions to life will be answered once you find it. No, Levni says that you pick your passion and develop it to the best of your ability and keep working at it.
I challenge all of you to STOP trying to find your passion and telling others to do so. Today is the day we tell others (and ourselves) to DEVELOP your passion because this will put you in the driver’s seat and in control of where your future is headed. “Despite U.S. high school graduation rates reaching all-time highs, many employers are finding that recent graduates are unprepared to succeed in the workforce because they lack foundational “soft skills.” While technical skills are often industry-specific, soft skills such as professional communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and time management are valued by employers across sectors.” -U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation recently published a report on why the business and education sector must work together to close the soft skills gap. These two sectors working together seems like one of those solutions that is almost so obvious we could have almost missed it. iMar is working daily to seek out partners so that we can bring our soft skills training to the people that need it most. We focus on the “Big 6” of critical thinking: Leadership, Creative Problem Solving, Analytical Thinking, Collaboration, Social & Emotional Intelligence, and Communication, because as the report mentions these are the skills that employers want that are rare to find.

Your Passion Does Not Have to Be Mine
I remember sitting in my college geology lab and thinking to myself, “I will never need this” and “why am I here?” I’m sure you have felt the same way as you struggled through classes that have absolutely nothing to do with your life or career. I enjoyed my geology class that was required for me to graduate. My professor was amazing and I could really feel his passion and love for rocks in every lecture. The Bigger They Are the Harder They Fall
I did not think that I would live to see the day retail giants like Sears, Kohl’s and Macy’s could not weather the storm that is the result of Hurricane Amazon. These juggernauts have been the cornerstone of retail shopping for decades and now they have met their match. The retail leaders of the past must either adapt to the technological disruptions that the Fourth Industrial Revolution is bringing about or get rolled over. Jeff Bezos, the founder, and CEO of Amazon has planned this take over for a long time and he is finally seeing the fruit of his labor. In his 1997 letter to his investors, Bezos wrote “We believe that a fundamental measure of our success will be the shareholder value we create over the long term. This value will be a direct result of our ability to extend and solidify our current leadership position. The stronger our market leadership, the more powerful our economic model.” A lot of jobs will be lost but with some guidance, many will create opportunities to actually advance their career and prosper from the vast economic changes that many are not focusing on yet, including some government officials. The X-Factor=Soft Skills
If you have been following the wave of changes due to the technological disruptions caused by Industry 4.0 then you know that developing your soft skills is the x-factor for current and future career success. If you have not been paying attention, then you really need to thank God that you stumbled upon this article. But what exactly are soft skills? Lei Han, the founder of Be My Career Coach, defines soft skills as, “skills we use to interact with others at work” and “these are the skills to help us manage self-perception and our reactions to adverse situations.” Don’t let the name fool you because having the right balance of soft skills and technical skills can be what lands you your big promotion. For example, if an employer is debating between hiring you and the candidate that has more technical skill experience, your ability to showcase and highlight your soft skills could possibly be what gives you the competitive edge over your competition.
