Automation has slowly crept into our lives under the disguise of convenience. I enjoy placing a mobile order and skipping the line, and it is great to just deposit money in the atm without having to talk about how my day is going but is the convenience worth the loss of human contact and jobs? The latest research reveals that automation will hit us in 3 waves, and we are currently in the first wave that will end in 2020. Also, the second wave will affect women more than men, but men will REALLY feel it in the 3rd wave!

“Despite U.S. high school graduation rates reaching all-time highs, many employers are finding that recent graduates are unprepared to succeed in the workforce because they lack foundational “soft skills.” While technical skills are often industry-specific, soft skills such as professional communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and time management are valued by employers across sectors.” -U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation recently published a report on why the business and education sector must work together to close the soft skills gap. These two sectors working together seems like one of those solutions that is almost so obvious we could have almost missed it. iMar is working daily to seek out partners so that we can bring our soft skills training to the people that need it most. We focus on the “Big 6” of critical thinking: Leadership, Creative Problem Solving, Analytical Thinking, Collaboration, Social & Emotional Intelligence, and Communication, because as the report mentions these are the skills that employers want that are rare to find.

Your Passion Does Not Have to Be Mine
I remember sitting in my college geology lab and thinking to myself, “I will never need this” and “why am I here?” I’m sure you have felt the same way as you struggled through classes that have absolutely nothing to do with your life or career. I enjoyed my geology class that was required for me to graduate. My professor was amazing and I could really feel his passion and love for rocks in every lecture. In 2001 the No Child Left Behind Act bill was signed and passed through Congress. Different aspects of the bill have been highly debated and criticized. The education systems dislike of the bill has not gone unnoticed. I do not agree with all aspects, if any, of the No Child Left Behind Act, but I do agree that students are being left behind, and something needs to be done. Unfortunately, many adults are about to face a similar situation and it is time to join the Education Revolution. If something does not change many Baby Boomers and Generation Xer’s will be left behind when it comes to the skills needed to perform their job due to the disruptions that are here (not coming, already HERE) because of the advancement in artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation. Be Quick to Listen & Slow to Speak
Ok, let’s be honest, most of us today are not quick to listen or slow to speak. Many of us listen to what we want to hear and we tailor our response based on the key points that relate to the direction we want to take the conversation in.
