Alice Boyes writes in her article, “5 Ways Smart People Sabotage Their Success” that “very smart people sometimes see their success as inevitable because of their intellect, and don’t see other skills as important.” As I read Boye’s article I thought about the members of the iMar Community that I have spoken with. iMar Community members are innovative, intellectuals that see the future not as something to fear, but as an opportunity to create the things they dream about. But, with all of our intellect, we have to make sure that we aren’t allowing our raw intelligence to stop us from reaching our full potential.
Boye mentions that one of the 5 ways that smart people sabotage their success is that they sometimes see their success as inevitable. The author mentions that this is because as a child they may have received a lot of positive reinforcement because they always knew the right answer to the question and education came easily to them. This hinders smart folks once they enter the workforce because they miss the fact that they also need social skills to work with different levels and styles of intelligence.
The ability to read your coworkers social and emotional queues are a highly sought after skill and we can’t let intellect block us from strengthening this skill. Lydia Dishman in her article, “These are the 4 Emotional Intelligence Job Skills You’ll Need in the Future” states, “soft skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, and writing proficiency top the list of what hiring managers find missing from job seekers’ personal toolkits. But according to theWorld Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, one the job skills that will make a candidate competitive in the job market of the future is emotional intelligence. The WEF predicts it will be among the top ten in 2020.” These are the type of skills that you have to add to your toolbelt so that you are more employable in 2020 and beyond.
